Ferrari Challenge at Imola, wins for Mapelli and Blancardi

After a long period undergoing modernisation, Imola’s Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari is once again the scene of exciting and spectacular racing and this weekend, it is hosting the fourth round of the season of the Ferrari Racing Days. The facility, redesigned in futuristic style by Hermann Tilke, was the backdrop to the second busy of track action for drivers in the Italian and European series of the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli and for no less than 19 single seaters run by the F1 Clienti Department of Maranello, these cars taking part in some free practice sessions. Special guest and a valued adviser to the owner-drivers was Marc Gené, the Scuderia Ferrari test driver, who did a few laps at the wheel of two cars raced by Michael Schumacher: an F2001 and a 2006 F1 248.

In the main category of the Italian Trofeo Pirelli, Marco Mapelli took his first win of the season. The Rossocorsa driver beat series leader Giorgio Sernagiotto (Motor/Piacenza) and Andrea Belluzzi (Motor/Modena) in Race 1. Among the gentlemen drivers in Coppa Shell, first across the line was Stefano Gai (Rossocorsa), followed home by Erich Prinoth (Ineco/MP) and Tommaso Rocca (Rossocorsa).
In the European Trofeo Pirelli, victory in the first race went to Italy’s Max Blancardi (Motor/Malucelli) ahead of the German Bjorn Grossmann (Autohaus Gohm) and French Nicolas Misslin (Stradale Automobile). As for the Coppa Shell, the order on the podium was Warm-Up’s Hungarian driver Tibor Valint, Sweden’s Magnus Frodig (Formula Automobile) and French Stephane Clareton (Stradale Automobile).
Tomorrow sees the second round of races in both series of the one-make championship and a chance once again to admire the on track action from the historic Formula 1 cars, completing two more series of free laps.
The second race in the Italian series of the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli will be shown live on Sky Sport 2 on Sunday 17 May at 15.30. Repeats of Race 1 will be broadcast on the same channel tonight at 1.30, 17 May at 12, 18 May at 9.30 and 19 May at 17. Race 2 will be shown on 19 May at 9.30 and 20 May at 17.
