First victories at Ferrari Racing Days at Monza

Monza, 28th March 2009

The first races of the 2009 season with the F430s, part of the Italian and European Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli, were started today at the Monza circuit. Meanwhile also the historic cars, participating in the Shell Ferrari Historic Challenge, went on the track for their first round on the European race calendar. All the drivers had to deal with extremely bad weather conditions, grey skies and rain.

The first race of the Italian Trofeo Pirelli racing series was won by Nicola Gianniberti: the Ineco/Ram Team's driver crossed the line ahead of Giorgio Sernagiotto (Motor/Piacenza) and Marco Mapelli (Rossocorsa), while amongst the Coppa Shell Gentleman Drivers Benedetto Marti (Motor/Piacenza) won the race ahead of Eric Prinoth (Ineco/MP) and Stefano Gai (Rossocorsa).



As far as the race of the Trofeo Pirelli European series is concerned victory went to the Austrian driver Philipp Baron (Baron Service), followed by the Czech Robert Pergl (Scuderia Praha) and the German Björn Grossmann (Autohaus Gohm). In the Coppa Shell the Hungarian Csaba Spitzmueller (Warm Up) won ahead of the Frenchman Jean-Marc Bachelier (Motor/Piacenza) and his fellow countryman Tibor Valint (Warm Up).

The first race of the Shell Ferrari Historic Challenge's European division grid "A" + "B", for cars with drum brakes, was won by Mister John B, behind the wheel of a 1980 Ferrari 512 BB LM, followed by Christian Traber in a sister-car and Darius Ahrabian with an extraordinary F40 LM, which is part of the Championship reserved for historical cars as of this year.

Tomorrow, on the second and last day of racing, the programme will start at 9am. Besides the Prancing Horse's single-marque Championships the Monza circuit will also host the Trofeo Abarth 500 debut race. Today the Abarths went on the track for their free practice session and the qualifying Both races of the Italian Ferrari Challenge Pirelli will be broadcast in a rerun tonight at 12am on Sky Sport Extra, on 30th March at 9:30am on Sky Sport 2 and at 4:30pm (Coppa Shell race 1); rerun on 28th March 1am on Sky Sport Extra, 31st March at 9:30am on Sky Sport 2 (Trofeo Pirelli, race 1). Sunday 29th March Sky Sport 3 will broadcast the second runs: at 10:45am the Coppa Shell, rerun on Sky Sport 2 on 30th March at 11:30pm and 1st April at 9:30am and the Trofeo Pirelli at 2:15pm, rerun on Sky Sport 2 on 1st April at 11:30pm, 2nd April at 9:20am and 9th April at 11:30pm.
