FIA GT Argentina Preview: The Drivers’ Title is Close at Hand for Bertolini-Bartels

MODENA, 17 November 2008

The FIA GT International Championship closes the 2008 racing with the final and crucial San Luis (Argentina) race, where Saturday and Sunday the tenth and last round will take place. After Vitaphone Racing Team’s fourth consecutive victory of the Team’s title with the Maserati MC12, the remaining Drivers’ Championship title is still up for grabs. Here the formidable Andrea Bertolini-Michael Bartels pair has an eight-lap advantage over the Hezemanz- Gollin team, with only ten points left to decide who the winner will be.
The return of such an important international race in Argentina has aroused great interest due to the long tradition of races and champions that have characterized Argent ina. This South American country is connected to the Maserati make through Juan Manuel Fangio’s F1 victory in 1957 and through industrial agreements reached in the 50s and 60s. The race will bet run along the new 6,249.85 meter-long, 14-meter wide Potrero de los Funes road circuit, which goes around a lake behind the Sierra Grande. The second Vitaphone pair, made up of Alexandre Negraõ and Miguel R amos, is 5.5 points behind Hezemans/Gollin and will try –aided by less ballast (45kg)– to overcome their rivals to finish behind their team-mates, sealing and incredible season.

Andrea BERTOLINI (Vitaphone Racing Team - Maserati MC12 no. 1) – Championship leader
We’ll be back at the track over a month after the Zolder victory and this is quite an unusual situation in racing, even if during these past weeks I certainly haven’t lost the rhythm and training. The main objective is to get the drivers’ title, which would be the third consecutive award for Maserati and the second one for Bartels and me. This is why the tactic will have to be extremely cautious: we have to handle our eight-point advantage well. Even though it doesn’t help to have to race on a road circuit carrying 85 kg of ballast, we’ll surely make it tough for our adversaries to catch up. On the other hand, I know our team-mates Ramos and Negraõ have a good chance of winning now that they’ll be driving a lighter car.”
