FIA GT Zolder Preview: MC12 with three cars to win the Championship

MODENA, 15 October 2008

great expectations in the FIA GT International Championship. Next Saturday and Sunday the 4 kilometers of the Belgian Zolder Circuit will be the setting of the next-to-last round of the season, the last round in Europe. With the two 12-cilinder Maserati MC12s, the Vitaphone Racing team tops the ranks in the Drivers and Car Makers classifications and has the chance of winning both tournaments one race prior to the close of the season.
The 6-point advantage allows the Bertolini-Bartels pair to mathematically win the title. Should MC12 number 1 win at Zolder and Hezemans-Gollin were kept away from the podium, the title for the Vitaphone Racing pair would be certain. They would have the same result if they obtain a second place and Hezemans-Gollin get a sixth place or lower, or if Bertolini-Bartels get third place for the MC12 and their rivals get eighth place. The situation is simpler in the Team’s Makers’ Championship, in which all Vitaphone —who has an advantage of 16.5 points over Phoenix Carsport Corvette— has to do is increase its advantage by two points to become the Champion for the fourth co nsecutive time. An important new element is the introduction of a third MC12 with the Vitaystems colors and the number 17, driven by Italian driver Matteo Bobbi (2003 FIA GT Champion) and Portuguese driver Pedro Lamy past MC12 drivers in Spa Francorchamps 2007.

Andrea BERTOLINI (Vitaphone Racing Team - Maserati MC12 no. 1) – Championship leader
“I am very confident about our performance at Zolder. I won’t go and do any mathematical calculations, even if I know quite well that we have the chance of closing the Championship. In Belgium we will finally have a less heavy (45 kg of ballast) car, and this should enable us to take better advantage of the quality of the excellent Michelin tires. The car balancing work carried out by the team during the practices is crucial, and it may also help that we will have a third MC12 from which to get extra input. I like the old-style Zolder track despite the fact there aren’t many vantage points from which to overcome other cars. I am s ure that Maserati will show its mettle.
