An important weekend

Maranello, 21st June 2007

This morning the celebrations for 60 years of Ferrari were initiated with a workshop on technological innovation, unveiling the 612 Scaglietti Sessanta. The celebrations during the weekend mark the end of the relay, which drove around the world, carrying the baton, with 60 symbols, representing the most important moments in the history of Ferrari, to Maranello.

"This is an important weekend," said Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo, before he presented the 612 Scaglietti, dedicated to this important anniversary, to the press, "because we celebrate 60 years of work, extraordinary moments, joyful moments and less joyful ones. During these years," Montezemolo said, talking about the years of his presidency, "we have always tried to look ahead, but without ever loosing sight of Enzo Ferrari's heritage. We are selling dreams, full of technology and innovation, which are also the fruit of craftsmanship, with the special capacity to transmit emotion and passion. Ferrari is right here in Maranello, but it is also open to the world," underlined the President, "and we are present in many markets: in the US and in China, in the Middle East and in South America, to name just the most important ones. Although there is this wide field, Ferrari continues to be based on its most important values: the patrimony made up of men and competence, the special relationship with its customers, who are also its ambassadors, and in the races. And all of this is framed by its exclusivity; a Ferrari needs to be desired."

Together with Ferrari director general, Amedeo Felisa, and Product Development Director Massimo Fumarola, Montezemolo finally unveiled the 612 Scaglietti Sessanta under the flashlight; this car has been built just 60 times, each of them personalized with one of the 60 symbols, which have been chosen to celebrate the 60 years of existence of the House of Maranello. There are many innovations on board of this car: electrochromatic roof of the latest generation compared to the one of the Superamerica, the new interiors with leather by Frau of exceptionally high quality and the "engine start" button positioned on the steering wheel. With a proportion of 3,2 BHP/Kg the 612 Scaglietti Sessanta is the best performing 2+2 in the world.

In the morning many journalists were present at the race track of Fiorano and had the opportunity to listen to explanations by the technicians of the Prancing Horse during a special press conference about technological innovations, concerning the engine, the gearbox, the electronics and the aerodynamics. The summary of the workshop, made by Roberto Fedeli, Technical Director GT, showed that it is possible, if one wants to increase performance, to follow two roads: raising power or decreasing weight. The first alternative is quite incompatible with the more and more stringent norms in terms of environmental pollution; thus it is preferable to decrease the weight of the cars, optimizing the architecture of the cars itself, constantly raising the specific engine performance, which is the true field for a constructor.

The meeting ended with Ferrari CEO Jean Todt underlining the importance of the know-how exchange between the motorsport department and the GT technicians, by setting up a permanent structure, working in the area of technology transfer, for example in the field of electronics. "For us innovation is extremely important and in this company we are always working towards improvement," said Todt. "Because for us, Enzo Ferrari's principle is still valid: our most beautiful car is the one we still have to build."
