ROUND 7 – SILVERSTONE – 27 MAY 2007 – RACE REVIEW

27 May 2007, Silverstone (UK) – After Haga’s extraordinary double win at Monza recently, everybody was looking to Silverstone with great interest. Since Friday, thanks to gloomy weather forecasts which urged everyone to use every moment of dry track time to the full, the best times were improved on. SBK riders beat not only their own track records but also the BSB prototype reference times.

The red light went out for the SBK start through the incessant rain. Drama unfolded almost instantly, as local hero Toseland crashed on lap three, and with his bike damaged and the coolant water running out, he started again to try and undo the damage. James was riding in very difficult conditions, with his handlebar seriously damaged.
The leading trio, in the meantime, was forging ahead, with Bayliss, Corser and Haga out front.
Biaggi, uncomfortable in the rain, was well behind, in 7th and then finally 6th position.
During the 20th lap, while Toseland was in 11th position and catching Neukirchner, Haga passed Corser and started to try to reel in Bayliss, who was only half a second ahead.
The rain tyres brought here by Pirelli did a really good job, as the clouds of spray behind the riders testified, and the fastest lap of the race was taken by Bayliss very close to the end, on the 26th circuit.
Haga couldn’t seriously attack Bayliss at that point, Ducati thus winning from two Yamahas.

A really difficult race for all, seriously affected by the non-stop rain.
On the grid Nannelli was missing: the Italian rider suffered a big crash during the warm up and was taken to the nearby Northampton hospital for a check up on his injured left knee.
Quickly out of the race were the two Ten Kate Honda riders, favourites after smashing the records in qualifying, and it was then up to Yamaha Word SSP Racing’s riders to take the lead and they looked like dominating the race. Parkes crashed, however, and West (substitute of Curtain) led the race until the very end, winning by a huge margin. Behind the Yamaha was Harms, while Roccoli, looking to be third, suffered a double mugging by Fujiwara and Foret, and he also crashed out.
A good (shortened) race for Vizziello, finishing 5th, first of the Italian riders with his Yamaha YZF R6.
Sofuoglu maintained the overall lead, despite his crash in the first lap, while World Champion Charpentier couldn’t exploit his opponents’ mistakes, and retired on the 8th lap.

The start of the bad weather and the delays caused by crashes in the morning warm up sessions provoked the organizers into reducing the STK1000 race distance from 15 to 10 laps. Riders faced the start under constant rain and in difficult conditions, but they still offered a good show.
At the start, the fastest rider was Simeon, but soon after the three leading riders were Pirro, Roberts and Aitchison.
After a few laps Roberts took the lead and finished the race as victor. Behind the Ducati rider it was then Aitchison (Suzuki) and Smrz (Honda), with Pirro losing out when he ran wide.
