ROUND 5 – ASSEN – 29th APRIL 2007 – RACE REVIEW

A great weekend, with passion and entertainment aplenty.
The first surprise was the weather: warm and sunny - quite unexpected - allowing the riders to exploit all their practice sessions to the full.
Good times were set even on Friday, with Toseland the Superpole winner taking a new SBK track record on Saturday.
On the first row with him were two Ducati riders, Lanzi and Bayliss, and then Biaggi, who was only 12th in the regulation qualifying sessions, yet he made a great recovery with his single Superpole lap.
Haga was unlucky in Superpole - he made a mistake and finished 15th, while Smrz reached the top positions: not so confident in normal qualifying he finished 12th, but he was 3rd place in warm up.

A spectacular show and many breathless moments for all during the 22 laps of the first race.
Toseland fought hard and at the end finished 1st, gaining very important points for the championship.
Together with him were Haga, Xaus and Bayliss who finished in this order. But there were also hard moments for early forces Corser and Lanzi, each of whom crashed and did not finish the race.
Just below the leaders, Biaggi, finished 6th, ahead of his teammate Kagayama.
Almost all the riders decided to race with a ”D” solution on the rear, which proved to be the best decision. This tyre is known with his regular name in the marketplace - Pirelli DIABLO SUPERCORSA SC1- the same tyre regularly sold in dealers for every rider’s ‘amusement’ on the racetrack.
For the front, many of the riders chose a “C” solution, but Bayliss, Lanzi and Toseland went for a “B”.
The result of it all was a race contested for all 22 laps, and Toseland (with the “B”) made a 1’40.756: on lap 20 - only two tenths more than lap two and only four tenths slower than his best lap.
The total race time was 27 seconds faster than 2006.

In race two almost everybody went for the Pirelli DIABLO SUPERBIKE SC1 for a rear. Also, race two delivered astonishing entertainment.
Xaus and Haga didn’t finish the race, but ahead of all the others Toseland and Bayliss made a sensational race: total race time was even better than race one (eight seconds faster) and the last five laps gave enough dramas to last a season! After race one Bayliss opted for a harder front tyre (from a “B” to “C”), while Toseland confirmed his “C” choice.
After passing each other many times in the last few laps Toseland and Bayliss entered the last chicane in this order. Bayliss miraculously overtook Toseland on the exit, winning by only nine thousandths of a second. Haga made the fastest lap with a 1’39.770, but more impressive was the consistency of the laptimes over the whole race distance.
Toseland missed his first double but is happy for the overall championship as he strengthened his lead. Pirelli is happy about the entertainment offered for the whole 22 laps and a great battle, with four different bikes in the top four positions.

Once again Supersport offered a great race. Once again Ten Kate Honda dominated.
With Charpentier still suffering from recent injury, Ten Kate came here with three riders.
Sofuoglu dominated for the most part, and won from his new teammate Pitt, after a great fight with Foret, who was able to come up to the lead after quite a bad start.
Two teammates on the podium, and Charpentier did honour to his World Champion status with a good weekend, but then at the end had to settle for a sixth place finish as fatigue took its toll.
The race time was 36’04.418, not comparable with last year because of different weather conditions.
The big winner is again Sofuoglu, who was also able to improve the lap record. Conditions were good, thus most of the riders raced with the soft solution on both front and rear.

At the start Corti led, followed by Van Keymeulen and Pirro.
Three laps in and the positions were already changed - and finally changed again. Dionisi, in 4th tried to reduce the leaders’ gap with a new track record of 1’43.616.
One more record for the Pirelli DIABLO SUPERCORSA SC2, but soon Pirro answered with another record… and again Van Keymeulen improved it with 1’42.548: more than 2” faster than the previous record! There was more… 16 riders improved the old record with the new DIABLO SUPERCORSA SC2.
After passing into the lead, Corti crossed the line first, followed by Pirro and Van Keymeulen.
But just before the podium ceremony, Race Direction gave a different result: Corti had passed van Keymeulen under a yellow flag, so the winner proved to be Pirro.

The weekend of good conditions for the Superstock 600 riders allowed them to make the most of it.
From Friday on, the riders pushed and scored interesting times.
Once again the Pirelli DIABLO SUPERCORSA SC2 underlined its performance, and this class offered us a really combative race.
Pirelli introduced the option for the Superstock riders of an Intermediate tyre, in case of a wet race this weekend, so that they could be safe in wet-but-drying conditions. This proved unnecessary here in sun-kissed Assen!
After a 10-lap battle, Antonelli won the race, ahead of Barrier and Berger.
