Nigel Mansell to race a Ferrari F430 GT in FIA GT championship at Silverstone

Maranello, 10th April 2007

Nigel Mansell will race a Ferrari F430 GT car in the FIA GT Championship race at Silverstone, on Sunday 6 May 2007. The Briton, former Scuderia Ferrari's driver (1989-1990) and 1992 Formula One World Champion, will take part in the two-hour GT race, sharing the car with one of the Scuderia Ecosse's regular drivers. The exact line-ups will be decided in the run up to the race weekend.

The opportunity for this guest appearance came about when the team heard a rumour that Mansell was considering driving a Ferrari in the American Le Mans Series and suggested he give it a go a bit closer to home. Nigel joined regular drivers Chris Niarchos and Andrew Kirkaldy at Knockhill circuit in Scotland on 5 April where he was quickly on the pace at the wheel of the F430 GT, developed by the Ferrari Corse Clienti department of Maranello.

Nigel Mansell: "This was a challenge I had to accept. Stewart Roden runs a very good team and the cars are beautifully prepared. The Ferrari F430 GT is fun to drive but it remains to be seen how I will get on in a race situation as ex-F1 drivers tend to race with a target on their backs! I had a great time with the team at Knockhill. I hope to see everyone at Silverstone as I think we are in for a great weekend of racing."

Stewart Roden, Scuderia Ecosse team principal: "In terms of race victories he is the most successful British F1 driver of all time which is an incredible achievement. Nigel was the last Ferrari driver to be selected personally by Enzo Ferrari before the great man's death in 1988. For a team that is so passionate about Ferrari we are so happy that Nigel is joining us and we will do everything we can to make sure that he has a successful weekend."

In addition to the Knockhill test, Nigel Mansell will be taking part in another session at Estoril (24-26 April) prior to the Silverstone race, to complete his preparations.
