Biagi inaugurates the Bucharest circuit

16/11/2006 - Bucharest

In front of 20,000 fans, the Vitaphone Racing Team driver starred in an exhibition at the new Romanian track.

The circuit was designed by German architect Hermann Tilke and should have hosted an FIA GT Championship race this year but red tape meant that the organisers had to postpone the event to next season.

However, Hartmut Beyer, CEO of the Bucharest Ring, still wanted to officially unveil the circuit and did so in the presence of Stephan Ratel, Hermann Tilke and Constantin Niculescu (president of the Romanian Automobile Club).

Thomas Biagi was among the FIA GT drivers present for the occasion. The Italian ran some thirty laps along sections of the track. He was at the wheel of a Vitaphone Racing Team Maserati Trofeo and had a number of personalities in the passenger seat, among them the Industry Minister Dan Popescu. The decision to limit the drive was taken for safety reasons (also the motive for the 70km/h speed limit) given the large crowd of over twenty thousand in attendance.

Biagi, to the delight of the fans, also executed some spectacular burnouts. The driver from Bologna was able to get his first look at the circuit: “It will be fast, with four long straights that offer many overtaking points. The most difficult stretch seems to be that parallel to the main straight. It is made up of two very quick downhill esses where courage and technique will make the difference”.

The track is situated around the Romanian parliament building, one famous for being the largest in Europe and the second biggest in the world behind the Pentagon.

On Saturday evening, world FIA GT champion Michael Bartels, Andrea Bertolini and Biagi were guests of honour at a reception organised by Autoitalia, the local importer.
