The Galleria Ferrari pays tribute to Piero Taruffi, 'the silver fox', a century after his birth

One hundred years after his birth, the Galleria Ferrari is to dedicate an exhibition to the motorcyclist, test driver, designer and direttore sportivo, Piero Taruffi. For one month from 10 November, the Galleria will house a section entirely dedicated to this important personality in the history of motor racing and motorcycling. His long driving career often intertwined successfully with Ferrari's.
The exhibition pays tribute to el zorro plateado, 'the silver fox'. The nickname was given to him by the Mexicans after the 1953 Carrera Panamericana. On display will be photographs, documents, original film, personal effects and some of the most prestigious trophies won by Taruffi over the course of his exceptional career. These highs include a second place in the 1953 Carrera Panamericana and a win in the 1954 Targa Florio and Giro di Sicilia. Perhaps his greatest triumph at the 1957 Mille Miglia where he drove a Ferrari 4100. The event was the last run on the classic Brescia-Roma-Brescia route and marked the peak of Taruffi's career.
Taruffi's sporting exploits were matched by his work as a designer. The circuits at Misano Adriatico, Funabashy and Izu Peninsula in Japan bear his name. He was also responsible for widening the Vallelunga track.
The Galleria Ferrari will be exhibiting, for the first time, some of the cars driven and designed by Piero Taruffi. Among them is the Scuderia Ferrari Alfa Romeo 8 C 2300 in which he competed on many occasions (including the 24 Hours of Spa and the Reale Grand Prix in Rome). In the vehicle he also claimed the 1932 Gran Sasso and the Coppa Frigo. Also on show will be the Cisitalia D 46 in which Taruffi drove for the Scuderia Cisitalia at the Grand Prix of Rome in 1947.
The 1948 Tarf bisiluro, a successful car designed by Taruffi and Carlo Giannini, and the Lancia D 24 from 1953 in which he took second in the Carrera Panamericana that year will also appear.
The collection would not be complete without a symbol of Taruffi's love for motorcycling in the 1939 Gilera 500 Rondine Circuito. The bike was designed together with CAN and Gilera.
The Galleria Ferrari in Maranello is open every day of the year, including weekends, from 9.30 to 18.00.
