FIA GT ZHUHAI - FREE PRACTICE

The first 90-minute free-practice session saw the Larbre Competition Ferrari 550 Maranello set the fastest time, with a lap of 1’32.537 fifteen minutes before the end of the first practice session. From the start of the session, Pedro Lamy in the Larbre Competition Ferrari was the fastest driver on track, constantly improving his time and the only one to go under the 1’33 mark. Most of the cars stayed out for a long time, completing rather long stints. The GLPK Corvette nr 6 and the Vitaphone Maserati nr 9 were second and third during most of the session.
The GPC Ferrari 575 driven by Andrea Piccini improved its time lap after lap. Two minutes before the end of the session, Piccini became the second driver to go below the 1’33 mark with a time of 1’32.699.

Just before the chequered flag, the Konrad Motorsport Saleen nr 5 set the third time with a lap of 1.33.185. The nr 6 GLPK Corvette was classified fourth, just in front of three Maserati MC12 cars, with the nr 9 and 10 Vitaphone cars ahead of the nr 15 JMB.
On its first appearance in the FIA GT Championship, the Russian Age Aston Martin DBR9 only completed 6 laps in the morning session, suffering from gearbox shift and alternator problems. “I hope the car is going to be OK this afternoon because I have never driven it before today !” said Bouchut.
In the GT2 category, the best time was set very early on, by the nr 66 GruppeM Racing Porsche of Marc Lieb and Mike Rockenfeller, which was nearly a second faster than the nr 88 Porsche of Tim Sugden and Emmanuel Collard. The GPC Ferrari 360 Modena was third, with a good time set by Luca Drudi. New entrants Matthew Marsh and Darryl O’Young from Hong Kong were fourth for much of the session in their Noble Group/GruppeM Porsche, until the Ebimotors Porsche 996 GT3 RSR improved right at the end of the allotted time, placing the Noble Porsche in 5th position.
