ITALIAN GT - VALLELUNGA - Giannoccaro and Vilander in control once more

15/10/2006 - Vallelunga

Giambattista Giannoccaro and Toni Vilander scooped both races in the conclusive round of the Italian GT at Vallelunga. The result proves that the Italian title won two weeks ago was fully deserved.

Race-1

Toni Vilander sped off at the start ahead of Chiesa’s Ferrari. Perazzini in the Racing Box MC12, meanwhile, held third place. After five laps Vilander’s lead over Chiesa had grown to almost 5”. On the same lap came the surprise when Perazzini was forced to pull out with an engine problem. Vilander’s race continued undisturbed and the Finn gained two seconds a lap. At the half hour stage Giambattista Giannoccaro replaced Vilander and, once the driver pit stops were over, Giannoccaro led Loris Kessel, Chiesa partner, by over 20”. This gap grew to thirty seconds a quarter of an hour from the end and 35 seconds with ten minutes to go. Giannoccaro task was to take the car to the finish line intact and the closing stages reserved no surprises as the Playteam Sara Free Maserati MC12 duly crossed the line up front. Vilander had the satisfaction of claiming the fastest lap of 1’32”759, at an average speed of 158.539 km/h.

Race-2

Unfortunately, Perazzini and Cappellari’s Maserati MC12 did not appear in the race 2 following the problem that arose in the first race. So, it was left to Vilander/Giannoccaro to fly the flag for Maserati in the very last race of the season. At the green light, Giannoccaro shot into an early lead over Kessel’s Ferrari. With a quarter of an hour gone the MC12 had a 1”2 lead but this was gradually eroded. On lap 11 Kessel attacked Giannoccaro and moved into the lead. The safety car then came on to remove Coldani’s Ferrari GT3 that was blocking the track and the group bunched up again. Kessel was the first driver to make his stop and handed over to Chiesa. After 34’ of racing Giannoccaro pulled in for the change with Toni Vilander. The Finn had to close a gap of over 25” and proved to be quick from the start of his stint (he would go on to claim the fastest lap of 1’33”157 at an average of 157.169 km/h). The MC12 made up 1”-1”5 a lap and put the pressure on Chiesa. A few minutes from the chequered flag, the Ferrari was forced to retire with a mechanical problem. This left the way open for the Playteam MC12 to collect its twelfth victory and fourth successive win of the season. In the general classification, Playteam Sara Free is now on 270 points.
