2006 » Maserati Trofeo Europe » Valencia - Trofeo Audemars Piguet Maserati Europa - At the start the last round of the season

The Spanish circuit of Valencia will this weekend host the seventh and final round of the 2006 Trofeo Audemars Piguet Maserati Europa. The event will see 28 drivers and 20 GranSports taking part. Among these drivers are the two challenging for the title: Maurizio Fabris, the current leader, and Alberto Cerrai, seven points off the pace in second. Fabris has had a fine session so far and has always made the podium. He has scored two wins (at Brno and Oschersleben), three second places (Monza, Silverstone and Spa) and a third place (Mugello). Cerrai has more than kept pace and secured four victories (Monza, Silverstone, Spa and Mugello) and a third position at Brno. However, his retirement at Oschersleben means that he is playing catch up.
A tight battle is also expected for third place. The most likely contenders are Andrea De Megni and Niccolò Oddi, only a point apart. Another with the potential to have a say is the young Giacomo Ricci along with Gianmarino Zenere and Alberto Vescovi.

On the starting grid at Valencia will be several Spanish sports stars. These include tennis player, Juan Carlos Ferrero (pictured, who will drive with Diego Alessi). He made the top ten in the ATP rankings and knows the circuit well having appeared on it many times in single seaters. Also competing will be David Serra Cervera, sports secretary for the Comunità Valenciana. He will be at the wheel of the Maserati GranSport Trofeo and will be paired with Luis Miguel Reyes in the Toora VIP car.
After the today free practice, best time for Ferrero-Alessi in 1'46"256, followed by Cerrai (1'46"286) and Oddi-Ricci (1'46"573).

Qualifying will take place tomorrow, Saturday 7 October, from 12.25 to 13.15; the hour long race is timed for 9.10 on Sunday 8 October.
