Q-TRONIC gearbox: Alfa back to the future

The Alfa 159 range boasts the very latest technological content in the form of the new Q–Tronic gearbox on the 2.4 JTDM 200 bhp and 1.9 JTDM 150 bhp versions. With Q-Tronic, the automatic gearbox returns to Alfa Romeo. With its autonomous control unit, it behaves just like a independent computer, offering a series of benefits that include better control of the car, excellent comfort and reduced fuel consumption.

The name Q-Tronic comes from the combination of the letter ‘Q’ and the word ‘Tronic’. The letter ‘Q’ is taken from the ‘Q4’ four-wheel drive technology developed by Alfa Romeo, evidence of the work carried out by Alfa Romeo on technologies and devices designed to improve the car’s sporting behaviour, driving comfort and active safety. The term ‘Tronic’, on the other hand, refers to the fact that the system is controlled by an electronic control unit ensures intelligent control of gear shifts.

The Q-Tronic system guarantees maximum comfort for the driver in ‘stop and go’ situations typical of urban traffic, where you are constantly changing gear to deal with continuous changes in speed. In addition, because there is no interruption in torque delivery when changing gear, the system eliminates the unpleasant jerkiness associated with a sudden absence of acceleration. The 6-speed gearbox is compact and light, with a built-in control unit, and it has been designed with particular emphasis placed on reducing fuel consumption.

Q–Tronic also offers tremendous versatility thanks to the four different drive modes available:

- the default mode when the car is first switched on, designed to offer the best possible driving comfort and reduce fuel consumption.

- Sport: featuring fixed gear shift ratios at higher engine speeds, giving the car a more sporty behaviour.

- Winter: facilitates starting and driving in low grip conditions.

- Sequential: allows the driver to shift gear manually.

Various other functions are also available that enable the vehicle to adapt to ever-changing driving and road conditions. These include the Up & Down slope function, which enables the car to recognise the slope of the road and adapt the gear shifts accordingly, and the Braking assist function, which increases vehicle deceleration when shifting down gear.
