Fabris in pole in the Trofeo at Spa

At the end of an exciting duel with Ricci, the championship leader claimed a splendid pole position.
It all came down to a few hundredths, forty-seven to be precise, as the Englishman took pole in an event he won last year. Fabris (2’37”934) set himself up well for tomorrow’s race, one in which his closest rival, Alberto Cerrai, will start from fifth.
The Roman could have challenged for pole but the rain that fell towards the end of the session prevented him from improving his time of 2’38”565 set early on.
However, taking into account the drivers’ bonuses and penalties during the 1’30” pit stops, Andrea Demegni could be best placed, especially after setting the third best time of 2’38”284. He just edged out Antonio Andolfato (2’38”355). Demegni will have eight seconds less to work off in this crucial stage while his adversaries, excluding Cerrai, have penalties that last from eight to twelve seconds more.

Coming back to the qualifying result, Ricci’s showing in the top six stood out. Also doing well were Galeazzi/Fiata, seventh, Sergio Rota – making a comeback in this category in eighth – and Gianmarino Zenere, tenth just behind Alberto Vescovi.
Rain fell during the second part of the qualifying session, evening out the performances with eight drivers clustered within seven tenths of each other.
Alberto Pizzicannella, thirteenth, leads the platoon of VIP cars. He heads Andruet/Liechti (Audemars Piguet), Goossens/Boulat (Toora), Coulomb/Wauters and Kidd/Constable.
Tom Van den Plas continues his familiarisation with the Trofeo GranSport as yesterday was his first time in the Modenese car.
Tomorrow’s hour long race will begin at 10.20 and the drivers know that the weather could play a decisive role.
