The Maserati MC12s dominate at Monza

The Maserati MC12s took the sixth round of the Italian Gran Turismo championship.
In an exciting race, Giannoccaro/Vilander, in the Playteam Sara Free car, claimed race 1. Behind them came Cappellari/Perazzini at the wheel of the Racing Box MC12. The roles were inverted in race 2. It was also a positive day for the AF Corse Light driven by Scionti/Sperati as they took fourth place in the GT3 class.
Race-1
Toni Vilander got off to a good start followed by Piergiuseppe Perazzini. The Maserati drivers managed to hold off the Chiesa's Ferrari 575 GTC when braking for the first chicane. In trying to overtake Perazzini, the Prancing Horse car overshot the turn. Vilander was fast from the very start and held a seven second lead as early as lap four. Perazzini was able to build a good advantage over Chiesa in second. Vilander continued to push and lapped two seconds quicker than his direct adversaries.

The first of the MC12 drivers to pit, after 25 minutes, was Perazzini. He handed over to Luca Cappellari. The minutes tucked away and Playteam Sara Free delayed calling Vilander in to make his stop. The lead Maserati eventually pulled in 20 minutes from the end and it was now the turn of Giannoccaro to fight off Luca Cappellari's comeback. The Racing Box driver took the lead and had the Playteam Sara Free car in his sights and duly overtook it at the first curve. Giannoccaro had to defend his position from Kessel but, shortly after, the Swiss driver ran into the barriers and had to retire after trying to overtake at the Parabolica. In the closing minutes, Giannoccaro began to close in on Cappellari, who had to slow down to contain his fuel consumption. The final few chicanes saw the Maserati MC12 drivers slalom through the back markers as they made their way to the finish. Giannoccaro came out of the Parabolica slightly ahead and he pulled alongside Cappellari as the chequered flag approached. In fact, it was Giannoccaro to cross the line first, with only a 0"133 advantage over the Racing Box driver.
In the GT3 category, the AF Corse Maserati GranSport Light with Scionti/Sperati on board raced consistently in coming home fourth in their class. The car proved to be reliable and displayed smoothly delivered performance.
Race-2
Cappellari’s swift start caught poleman Giannoccaro off guard and he went into the first chicane in front. The two MC12s had a healthy margin over their pursuers. After a Giannoccaro attack, Cappellari managed to build a gap of a few seconds over the Playteam Sara Free driver. The excitement came on lap 9 when Giannoccaro spun at the second Lesmo. The car stopped in the middle of the track but was able to get going again and slip into sixth spot overall and third in the GT1 class. Giannoccaro soon gave way to Toni Vilander, while Cappellari stayed on the track with a 14” lead over Chiesa. 25’ from the end, Cappellari pulled in to be substituted by Piergiuseppe Perazzini. Once all the stops had been made, the Racing Box MC12 took longer than planned get on the move but the problems were eventually resolved.
At the same time, Chiesa’s Ferrari came into the pit lane with a burst tyre and this allowed a quick Toni Vilander to move into second overall, behind Perazzini (who had a 40” lead). However, Vilander continued to force the pace. Five minutes from the end, the safety car was called for following a crash between the GT3 cars at the first chicane. Perazzini’s advantage was annulled although two lapped cars separated the MC12s. There was no time for a restart and the race came to an end with the safety came on, with Perazzini winning from Vilander. In the GT3 class, AF Corse’s Light driven by Sperati/Scionti came sixth in its class.
Giannoccaro and Vilander have consolidated their championship lead on 190 points. Luca Cappellari has made up some ground and is in fifth on 135.
