LMS - 1000 KM SPA - PREVIEW

Winding through undulating forests, Spa sparked off a generation of "natural" circuits. Set up amidst the communes of Francorchamps, Stavelot and Malmedy, the non-permanent Belgian circuit remains one of the most desired tracks by past and present racing drivers.
The 1954 race, comprising the period modern sports cars, could easily be considered as an ancestor of the current 1000KM of Spa. The 500KM was conceived in 1963 and consequently won by the Ferrari team’s Willy Mairesse. The 1000KM of Spa was set in motion on the 22nd May 1966. The fine moments of the event eventually drew to a close in 1975 as Pescarolo’s driver Bell took home the title in the Alfa Romeo 33. The 1000KM reappeared between 1982 and 1988 with class C racing cars. Re-launched fifteen years later, the 21st Century 1000KM of Spa, since 2004, became an integral part of the 1000KM of Le Mans Series.
