Trofeo Audemars Piguet Maserati Europa - Pole position to the young Oliver Jarvis

The qualifying session to decide the grid positions for the Trofeo Audemars Piguet Maserati Europa race was held today (6 May) at Silverstone. In pole position is the young Englishman, Oliver Jarvis, along with his partner, Edd Straw. The two steered their guest car through the driving rain to set a fastest time of 2'14"602. In second was Diego Alessi (2'16"536) with series leader Alberto Cerrai in third (2'17"078). Alessi and Cerrai may be adversaries in the Trofeo Audemars Piguet Maserati Europa but they will team up for the European GT3 championship on board an AF Corse GranSport Light. Completing row two with a time of 2'21"522 is Maurizio Fabris. Andrea Demegni was only two tenths back in fifth.
The session was a wet one, with light rain falling at the start of the session only to become heavier soon after. Jarvis, the twenty-two year old winner of the British Formula Renault 2005, is this season competing in the English Formula 3 championship. He set the top time in his early laps as he found himself immediately at home in the Maserati GranSport Trofeo. "It is a very powerful car, one in which the feeling and handling come right away", he revealed.

After the first race of the season (at Monza on 2 April) some drivers were assigned the first penalty points and bonuses. Those concerned are the first and the last three at the each race. The top three are given time penalties of 12, 8 and 4 seconds while the bottom three are awarded 12, 8 and 4 second bonuses. So, Cerrai's first place at Monza means that he has to spend an extra 12 seconds in the pits during his obligatory stop at Silverstone. Fabris, second at Monza, will have to deal with an eight second delay. Carlo Romani, one the only hand, will benefit from a bonus of 8 seconds.
Aside from Demegni's fifth place in the Pakelo VIP car, the Jean Claude Andruet-Mark Hales car (Audemars Piguet) took 12th while the Keith Wood-Roberto Giordanelli crew (Toora) occupy 13th. The Maserati West Europe GranSport, with Jean Coulomb and supermodel Jodie Kidd at the wheel, concluded the session with the 16th best time.
Tomorrow, Sunday 7 May, the 50 minute race is programmed to begin at 10.05 local time.
