2006 » FIA GT3 EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP » Silverstone

Maserati vehicles face a new sporting challenge as five GranSport Lights take part in the new European FIA GT3 Championship. The series is reserved to gran turismo cars that closely resemble normal production models. Three Maserati GranSport Lights fielded in the series will bear AF Corse and will feature Roberto Sperati-Andrea Palma, Alberto Cerrai-Diego Alessi and Lorenzo Casč-Christian Passuti. Racing for GPC Sport will be Giuseppe Arlotti-Paolo Cutrera and Fabrizio Gini-Bruno Barbaro.
At the end of today's two free practice sessions (Friday 5 May), the fastest Maserati is with Casč-Passuti (1'58"503), than Sperati-Palma (1'58"506), Cerrai-Alessi (1'58"725), Gini-Barbaro (2'01"276) and Arlotti-Cutrera (2'01"574).
The European FIA GT3 Championship has a five race calendar, one that parallels that of the FIA GT series. Events will be held at Silverstone (England, 7 May), Oschersleben (Germany, 2 July), Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium, 30 July), Digione (France, 3 September) and Mugello (Italy, 17 September). Each round will consist of two sixty-minute races; each team is made up of two drivers who can each run a twenty minute qualifying session. Driver changes must be made between laps 23 and 37. At the end of the season, European Driver and Team titles will be assigned.
The aim of the European FIA GT3 Championship is to bring together gran turismo cars from the most prestigious automobile marques. The cars are slightly less well equipped compared to the roadgoing versions and they will appear on the most demanding and exciting circuits in Europe.
The Maserati GranSport Light fully respects the spirit of these regulations. The Modenese vehicle will be up against much more powerful cars but each race is a test of the Trident gran turismos reliability. Further, as Alberto Cerrai, Diego Alessi's participation demonstrates (both in Trofeo Maserati 2006) and Andrea Palma (winner of Trofeo Maserati 2004 edition), the continental series offers Trofeo Audemars Piguet Maserati Europa drivers a new sporting test and a natural step in motorsport.
