Official SBK Tests at Valencia: second day

BAYLISS INTO THE 1’34s DESPITE CRASH Troy Bayliss (Ducati Xerox) set the fastest lap of the current Valencia tests in the morning session, posting a 1’34.987 on his way to the top of the timing sheets. He was to fall later in the afternoon session, without injury, losing the front on the first right-hander – partly thanks to an ever-present wind. In second place overall, on combined times from day one and day two, Troy Corser (Alstare Suzuki Corona Extra) improved on his first day best by over half a second. Noriyuki Haga (Yamaha Motor Italia) scored third place and all the top riders except Alex Barros (Klaffi Honda) managed to reduce their Monday times. Chris Walker (PSG-1 Kawasaki Corse) was an impressive fourth, making it four different machines in the top four. Steve Martin once more punched over his Petronas’ 900cc weight, setting a 1’36.413, good enough for 13th fastest status thus far.

KAGAYAMA COMPETITIVE IN THE TOP FIVE Yukio Kagayama (Alstare Suzuki Corona Extra) and Fonsi Nieto (PSG-1 Kawasaki Corse) were fifth and sixth in the two-day classification, and the last two riders to break the 1’36 barrier. Lorenzo Lanzi, seventh quickest, missed out by only 0.009 seconds, with Karl Muggeridge the best of the Winston Ten Kate Honda riders, eighth overall. 2004 World Champion James Toseland went 12th.

SUPERSPORT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP Sebastien Charpentier (Winston Ten Kate Honda) made best use of good early morning conditions to set the fastest lap ever officially recorded in Supersport, and approached the 1’37.1 he posted in an unofficial test at Valencia last month. His 1’37.437 of today was almost one second faster than the next quickest competitor, his own team-mate, Kenan Sofuoglu. Kevin Curtain (Yamaha Motor Germany) was the next man up, with Massimo Roccoli (Yamaha Team Italia) also improving his day one time to go fourth.

SUPERSTOCK 1000 FIM CUP Alessandro Polita (Team Celani Suzuki) took the fastest lap of the two days of Superstock action so far, with Claudio Corti (Team Lorenzini by Leoni Yamaha) second quickest, thanks to his day one time. Briton Richard Copper was eighth on his EMS Racing Suzuki and American rider Jason Perez (HP Racing Suzuki), continued his introduction to Superstock by posting 13th fastest time.
