Triple record for Ferrari at Pebble Beach auction

Ferrari has emerged as the star of the now-traditional and highly prestigious historic car auction hosted by the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California. The Prancing Horse’s cars racked up no less than three world record prices in their categories this year: a 1959 Ferrari 250 California Spider Competizione LWB, which dominated the entire event, was sold for 7,260,000 dollars (5,299,000 euro) while a 1961 250 GT Berlinetta SWB made 6,105,000 dollars(4,051,000 euro) and a 1952 340 America Spider 2,530,000 (1,846,000 euro). A 365 GTB/4 Speciale, a one-off Pininfarina model unveiled at the Paris Show in 1969, also earned a very impressive 1,241,000 euro and a 1950 166 Inter Barchetta changed hands for over 500,000 euro.
Each one of the abovementioned cars is a genuinely unique gem whose very history sets it completely apart. The 250 California Spider Competizione that made the highest price in the auction, for instance, is the only LWB version of the model with an aluminium chassis. It also includes a high profile competition CV that includes a fifth overall placing at the 1960 Sebring 12 Hour Race and class victories at the Nassau and Road America circuits. The 250 GT Berlinetta SWB, nicknamed the Hot Rod because of its extreme, competition-focused set-up, also has a fascinating life story as it was driven in the Tour de France Automobile and the Paris 1,000 Km Race in 1961 by the legendary likes of Maurice Trintignant, Graham Hill, Jo Bonnier and Olivier Gendebien. The 340 America Spider is equally interesting too: it was one of the very first ever Ferraris to go to America and one of just five examples of this model bodied by Vignale.
Needless to say, all of these Prancing Horse cars have been awarded Authenticity Certificates by Ferrari Classiche, the in-house department that provides owners of classic Maranello cars with the assistance and support required to keep their cars in pristine, original working condition. Ferrari Classiche’s superb services range from regular maintenance check-ups to spares (components are recast at Maranello using original designs from the company archive) and full restorations.
The record results garnered by the Maranello cars at auction come just after English collector Andrew Pisker’s Ferrari 250 California SWB won the People’s Choice Award at the Concours d’Elegance. The aforementioned 1961 car was meticulous restored by Ferrari Classiche over a three year period and received almost 100,000 votes from the readers of the MSN Autos website, the event’s partner. They chose the 250 California as the most beautiful of all the cars entered in this year’s edition of the classic American concours d’elegance.
