Spanish GP – New aerodynamics

Montmelo (Barcelona,) 7 May

The fifth round of the Formula 1 World Championship got underway today with free practice at Catalunya’s Montmelo circuit, which has hosted this event twenty times. At the end of the ninety minutes of practice, the McLarens of Lewis Hamilton (1.21.134) and Jenson Button (1.21.672) topped the time sheet, while third was Michael Schumacher in the Mercedes (1.21.716).
First of the two Ferraris was Fernando Alonso, eighth in 1.22.258, completing 19 laps, while team-mate Felipe Massa did 22 laps on his way to twelfth fastest with a lap in 1.22.975. As expected on this track, there wasn’t much grip and the other feature of the morning for Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro was a comparative test of the new blown rear wing system. The team carried out various tests on both cars which will continue this afternoon, when the second practice session gets underway at 14h00.
