American Le Mans Series – A convoluted race

Maranello, 18 April

It was an unlucky day for the Risi Competizione team in California, after the elation of victory in the Sebring 12 Hours a month ago. The Houston Ferrari car, driven by the Brazilian, Jaime Melo took pole on Friday in qualifying, but was caught up in the traffic jam caused by the prototype cars on the opening lap and further delayed by a problematic pit stop which cost it a few places. At the end of the race, affected by endless appearances from the Safety Car, any hope of making it to the podium vanished as a result of a damaged rear tyre, after a collision with a prototype car around eight laps from the flag. The race was won by the Patrick Long-Jorg Bergmeister Porsche 911, followed by the Chevrolet Corvette of Jan Magnussen-Johnny O’Connell and the BMW M3 of Tommy Milner-Bill Auberlen. The F430 GT, which crossed the line in the hands of Gimmi Bruni thus had to settle for fourth place, while the two other Ferraris, entered by Tequila Patron Spirits and crewed by Scott Sharp-Johannes van Overbeek and Ed Brown-Guy Cosmo finished seventh and eighth.

The next round of this prestigious series takes place on Saturday 22 May at the Laguna Seca circuit in California.
