Two current American cars could have clobbered the Concorde in a race on the runway.
The storied supersonic jet, which made its final commercial flight in October 2003, had a takeoff speed of 225 mph. For the American SSC Ultimate Aero supercar, which has a top speed of 260 mph to 273 mph, 225 mph sounds like idling speed.
In a recent e-mail message, an SSC spokesman wrote about "loafing around Pocono [a famous NASCAR track in Pennsylvania] at speeds of around 210 mph."
